7:48 pm - Emmy Had Sweet Potatoes!
|
I bought an organic sweet potato. I boiled it and ran it through the food mill. As you can see, she hated it!

8:43 am - Happy 2-Month Birthday Emmeline!
|
This might be amusing to no one else except me:
We were having a hard time getting Emmy to sleep last night (nothing new there). Craig would get her to sleep, but she'd wake up when he stopped rocking her and moved toward the crib. I'd nurse her and she'd fall asleep, then wake up when I shifted position slightly.
So I laid her on the bed facing me, took off my shirt and bra, and let her nurse with us both lying down. She fell asleep, and so did I.
I woke up about 3:45 and realized she hadn't woken me up for a feeding. She wakes me up every night between 2:45 and 3:00 am. Then I realized that while my left breast was engorged and full of milk, my right breast was empty.
She woke up, fed herself, and went back to sleep!
What an independent child we're raising! Two months old today and she already gets her own breakfast!

6:25 pm - My Poor Max :(
|
Max tore his ACL. ( http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Anterior_cruciate_ligament )
The vet said he's never seen an ACL torn this bad, and he HAS to have surgery to fix it. Not having the surgery is not an option. It's torn so badly that he will never bear weight on it again if it's not fixed, and then the other leg will break down. He has to have it ($1,500 or so), then have a 6-8 week recovery period where he's kept very quiet and crated every moment we're not there. No walks, no playing with other dogs, no vigorous activity. He will have to be on lead even in the backyard to go potty. No stairs either. I think we will have to rig up some sort of sling to lift his back end and make him walk down the stairs to the backyard on his front legs. He can't jump on the furniture or play with Mattie. I'm thinking we will have to keep them separated and keep Max in his crate a whole lot.
This sucks and my heart is breaking for my wonderful Max. I'll cook him a really good supper on Sunday night before his surgery on Monday.

6:29 am - The Spoiled Under-30 Crowd
|
My sister sent this to me, and I found it quite funny:
THE SPOILED UNDER-30 CROWD!!!
When I was a kid, adults used to bore me to tears with their tedious diatribes about how hard things were when they were growing up; what with walking twenty-five miles to school every morning ... uphill BOTH ways yadda, yadda, yadda.
And I remember promising myself that when I grew up, there was no way in hell I was going to lay a bunch of crap like that on kids about how hard I had it and how easy they've got it! But now that.. I'm over the ripe old age of thirty, I can't help but look around and notice the youth of today.
You've got it so easy! I mean, compared to my childhood, you live in a damn Utopia! And I hate to say it but you kids today you don't know how good you've got it!
I mean, when I was a kid we didn't have The Internet. If we wanted to know something, we had to go to the damn library and look it up ourselves, in the card catalog!! There was no email!! We had to actually write somebody a letter ..with a pen! Then you had to walk all the way across the street and put it in the mailbox and it would take like a week to get there!
There were no MP3's or Napsters! You wanted to steal music, you had to hitchhike to the damn record store and shoplift it yourself! Or you had to wait around all day to tape it off the radio and the DJ'd usually talk over the beginning and @#*% it all up!
We didn't have fancy crap like Call Waiting! If you were on the phone and somebody else called they got a busy signal, that's it! And we didn't have fancy Caller ID Boxes either! When the phone rang, you had no idea who it was! It could be your school, your mom, your boss, your bookie, your drug dealer, a collections agent, you just didn't know!!! You had to pick it up and take your chances, mister!
We didn't have any fancy Sony Playstation video games with high-resolution 3-D graphics! We had the Atari 2600! With games like 'Space Invaders' and 'asteroids'. Your guy was a little square! You actually had to use your imagination!! And there were no multiple levels or screens, it was just one screen forever! And you could never win. The game just kept getting harder and harder and faster and faster until you died! Just like LIFE!
When you went to the movie theater there no such thing as stadium seating ! All the seats were the same height! If a tall guy or some old broad with a hat sat in front of you and you couldn't see, you were just screwed!
Sure, we had cable television, but back then that was only like 15 channels and there was no on screen menu and no remote control! You had to use a little book called a TV Guide to find out what was on! You were screwed when it came to channel surfing! You had to get off your ass and walk over to the TV to change the channel and there was no Cartoon Network either! You could only get cartoons on Saturday Morning. Do you hear what I'm saying!?! We had to wait ALL WEEK for cartoons, you spoiled little rat-bastards!
And we didn't have microwaves, if we wanted to heat something up we had to use the stove or go build a frigging fire.. imagine that! If we wanted popcorn, we had to use that stupid Jiffy Pop thing and shake it over the stove forever like an idiot.
That's exactly what I'm talking about! You kids today have got it too easy. You're spoiled. You guys wouldn't have lasted five minutes back in 1980!
Regards, The over 30 Crowd

6:00 pm - Emmy's 3-week checkup
|
Emmy had her 3-week doctor's visit Tuesday. Generally, doctors like to see a weight gain of 1/2-1 ounce a day for the first month. That's after the initial expected weight loss after birth.
Emmy's birth weight: 6 pounds 1 ounce Emmy's 1-week weight: 6 pounds 2 ounces (no post-birth weight loss for this little one!)
At the rate of 1/2-1 ounce a day, that should have put her weight at somewhere between 6 pounds 9 ounces and an even 7 pounds. Her actual weight?
7 pounds 11.5 ounces.
And here I was worried that she wasn't getting enough to eat!
That's my girl! :)

My degu died today.
Apparently the average lifespan of a degi is 5-8 years, and Miru was 7 1/2.
That doesn't make it hurt any less though.

7:20 am - Heehee!
|
Emmeline's birth announcement came out in the paper. They list all babies born in each of the hospitals in their own column. Hers was the only entry listed in a category all by itself.
They mistakingly put her under the heading, "At Home."
I wonder how many people are going to think Craig and I didn't make it to the hospital in time!
